The Center developed the phrase "Aggression Management®" in 1993 to address the problem of aggressive behavior among humans.  It was felt that "Violence" and "Crisis" were only the result of aggression, not the cause, and until one considered the genesis of this cause one could not find its solution . . . Prevention.    Out of this realization The Center developed the concepts of Aggression Managers® and the Aggression Continuum™. The Center invites you to learn the skills of an Aggression Manager and learn the enormous value of the Aggression Continuum.

Aggression Manager®

The recent report of a $50,000,000 settlement, convinces us that the only acceptable form of workplace aggression and violence has become prevented workplace aggression and violence. The Center empowers employees with the skills to identify aggressive behavior, foresee the possibility of conflict, engage and prevent it. We also teach employees how to defuse aggression and, if this is not enough we show them how to effectively intervene in a way that minimizes both harm and expense. The Center also instills the sense of responsibility to engage an immerging aggressor and diffusing potential conflict before it becomes an incident. These empowered employees are Aggression Managers®.

Aggression Continuum

The Aggression Continuum™ is The Center's graphic illustration of the process an aggressor experiences from the very outset of anxiety through the explosion of violence. For every incident there are pre-incidents. Aggression Managers® can identify these pre-incidents..

We all experience the explosions of anxiety called triggers: we wake up late; go in the kitchen for coffee and breakfast and find none; we leave the house finding we have forgotten it’s garbage day; we drag the garbage to the road; now we are late and we have to face the morning traffic! We all experience these triggers but we cope with them.

For the individual who can no longer cope, one anxiety follows another and these accumulated anxieties lead into the Escalation Phase and Mounting Anxiety as shown in our graphic. Mounting Anxiety changes us. It changes our behavior, our body language and the way we communicate with each other. These changes can be as subtle as scattered and disjointed thinking. Aggression Managers® can identity these changes, engage the individual and usually prevent the escalation of aggression before it ever becomes an incident.

But what about your aggression?  When there is an emerging aggressor, with adrenaline rushing; it is a natural human response for the victims' adrenaline to rise to prepare them for attack . . . How  victims controls and/or utilizes their adrenaline will determine whether they will cause a further escalation of this incident or defuse it.

What we have been describing is based upon our Primal Aggression Continuum™, based on the primal instinct of fight or flight, fueled by adrenaline and indicative of an individual progressive losing control and attacking.  We have also developed a Cognitive Aggression Continuum™.  Cognitive Aggression is conscious or non-conscious, fueled by intent and is indicative of predatory, victimizing behavior or the behavior of a terrorist.  We can identify a terrorist using behavior, body language, and verbal communication indicators.

Aggression Managers® are taught through the use of the Aggression Continuum™ to measure, and thereby manage their adrenaline/aggression.
